No. 15 Hawai`i Cruises Past Utah State In Three Games

HONOLULU - The No. 15 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (10-4, 4-0 WAC) swept through the Utah State Aggies (10-10, 3-3) 30-14, 30-23 and 30-18 in front of a crowd of 7,040 at the Stan Sheriff Center Friday.

Sarah Mason had a big match, hitting .667 with 14 kills, 18 digs and two aces. Jamie Houston hit .386 with 23 kills and seven digs while Kari Gregory hit .524 with 12 kills, seven blocks and three aces. Kanoe Kamana`o had another great night, all-around, posting 48 assists, nine digs and five blocks.

Hawai`i came out firing, as a block by Kamana`o and Gregory capped a 8-1 start to the game, forcing an early Aggie timeout. Utah State got within four points at 11-7, only to see a 7-1 UH run push the Rainbow Wahine edge to 18-8. Hawai`i made another big 6-0 run later in the game before eventually ending it 30-14.

UH again opened an early lead in game two, going up 5-1 and 10-6. The Aggies would get within two points on a few occasions before Gregory took over, posting three kills and a block in a 6-1 run to get UH's lead to 27-20. After allowing USU back within four points at 27-23, it was Houston's turn, as she put away the final three kills of the game to end it 30-23.

The Rainbow Wahine again jumped ahead in game three, starting it 8-2. Utah State brought it back to 16-12 before UH went on a big 8-0 run that broke it open at 24-12. Hawai`i eventually took it 30-18, extending UH's WAC winning streak to 111 matches.

The next Rainbow Wahine match will be on Sunday, Oct. 7, against conference co-leader Nevada at 4 p.m.
