STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team completed day two of the Wilson/ITA Northwest Region Championships Saturday at the Taube Tennis Center.
Sophomore Sascha Heinemann and freshman Andreas Weber each won two matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the main singles draw. Third-seeded Weber beat Eoin Heavey of California, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 and the 11th-seed Andy Kuharsky of Washington, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Heinemann, the 17th seed, defeated 10th-seeded Daniel Sebescen of California in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-2, and won a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, decision over 7th-seeded Richard Wire of Stanford. Weber and Heinemann will play each other Sunday for a spot in the semifinals.
In consolation singles play, senior Derrick Lajola and freshman Spencer Mendoza advanced to the third round. Lajola won a three-set super tiebreak decision over Asaf Cohen of San Francisco, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (5), and Mendoza dropped UC Davis's Tyler Lee, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles play, two teams advanced to the round of 16. The sophomore duoJeff Fitch and Heinemann won an 8-6 decision over Santa Clara's Brian Brogan and Jay Wong. Third-seeded Seeberger and Weber beat Asaf Cohen and Thong Tu of San Francisco, 8-3.
The tournament continues on Sunday as members of the Rainbow Warriors will compete in the singles main draw, doubles main draw and consolation singles bracket.
