STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team completed day one of the Wilson/ITA Northwest Region Championships Friday at the Taube Tennis Center with all eight Rainbow Warriors competing in the 128-player singles main draw and 64-team doubles main draw.

Seniors Derrick Lajola, Matt Seeberger, Chad Faulk, and sophomore Jeff Fitch won matches in the round of 128 before losing in the round of 64. Freshman Spencer Mendoza almost pulled off an upset of 17th-seeded Joel Kusnierz of St. Mary's, 7-5, 7-6 (4). In the round of 64, freshman and third-seed Andreas Weber defeated Tim Lantin of Sacramento State, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Sophomore Sascha Heinemann won a 7-6 (2), 2-0 retired. decision over Pacific's Moritz Starke. Weber plays Eoin Heavey (Cal) and Heinemann plays 10th-seeded Daniel Sebescen (Cal) on Saturday.

In doubles play, three teams advanced to the round of 32. The duo of Faulk and Lajola defeated Nic Amaroli and Peter De Moral of UC Davis, 8-6. Fitch and Heinemann won an 8-6 decision over Valclav Burger and Ken Nakahara of California. Third-seed Seeberger and Weber had a bye.

The tournament continues on Saturday as members of the Rainbow Warriors will compete in the singles main draw, doubles main draw, and consolation singles bracket.
