SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's tennis team completed day one of the Wilson/ITA West Region Championships Thursday at the Barnes Tennis Center with all seven Rainbow Wahine competing in the 128-player singles main draw and 64-team doubles main draw.

UH senior Samanta Cappella advanced to the round of 32 with a three-set victory over Loyola Marymount's Vanessa Lunardi, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4. Cappella will play 16th-seeded Nikola Dimitrova of UNLV on Friday. Senior Kana Aikawa lost a tough match to Katja Decker-Sundowski of USC, 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles action, the team of seniors Sabita Walkup and Jacqui Williams defeated Pepperdine's Alicia Poladian and Vanessa Dunlap, 8-4. Walkup and Williams advance to Friday's round of 32, where they will face the No. 1 seed, Alex McGoodwin and Riza Zalameda of UCLA. The duo of junior Julia Sandborn and Cappella lost a heartbreaker to UC Santa Barbara's Brittany Kausen and Kristen Wilson in a tiebreak, 9-8 (5).

The tournament continues on Friday as members of the Rainbow Wahine will compete in the singles main draw, the consolation bracket and the doubles main draw.
