RUSTON, La. - Playing a match just six hours after arriving in town from Honolulu, the No. 11 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (13-4, 7-0 WAC) swept through the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters (6-17, 0-6) 30-25, 30-20 and 30-14 in front of a LTU record crowd of 736 at the Thomas Assembly Center Wednesday.
Jamie Houston led UH, hitting .324 with 19 kills, four blocks and four aces. Sarah Mason added 11 kills and five digs in just two games while Jayme Lee led all players with 12 digs. Kari Gregory led the blocking effort with seven blocks, while Juliana Sanders added five. Kanoe Kamana`o had 41 assists and four blocks.
The Rainbow Wahine started out very sluggish, looking like a team with serious jet-lag, allowing Tech an 11-10 edge. But UH responded with a 7-1 run, boosting their lead to 17-12. After allowing a short 3-0 run by the Lady Techsters, Hawai`i scored nine of the next 11 points to take a commanding 26-17 advantage. Down 28-19, Louisiana Tech made a 6-1 run, cutting it back to 29-25. But Houston blasted her sixth kill of the game to end it 30-25.
Hawai`i again spotted Tech a lead at the start of the second game, as LTU went ahead 3-0. But UH answered right back, scoring six of the next seven points to take a 6-4 edge. The Rainbow Wahine used another big run (7-1) to get their advantage to 14-7. Louisiana Tech fought their way back within two points at 17-15, only to see UH score four-straight before ending the game 30-20 on a 7-1 run.
UH came out firing to start the third game, going ahead 7-1. Tech never really made it close, getting within four points on a few occasions before a 14-4 run pushed it to game point at 29-12. After a couple LTU points, UH ended the match on a kill by Jessica Keefe, ending it at 30-14. Keefe fell at the end of the play, and is doubtful for the match at New Mexico State on Friday, Oct. 13.
The team will leave for El Paso, Texas, tomorrow, before their match with the No. 25 Aggies.
