HONOLULU - Back from the three-match California road trip, the University of Hawai`i men's tennis team defeated Loyola Marymount, 5-2, Saturday, at the UH Tennis Complex to earn their first dual match victory of the 2006 season.
The Rainbow Warriors (1-3) jumped off to a great start by winning all three of the doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Seniors Ryan Sceats and Jarrod Diepraam defeated Matt Phillips and Michael Wojnarowicz, a St. Louis High School graduate, 8-6, at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 court, senior Bryon Weinberg and freshman Jeff Fitch outlasted Carlos Malet and Linas Cicenas, 9-7 while freshman Sascha Heinemann and junior Chad Faulk beat Reyniere Roxas and Michael Chan, a Kealakehe High School graduate, 8-2, at No. 3.
UH won four of the six singles matches to earn the team victory. Heinemann defeated Wojnarowicz, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 court and at No. 2, Weinberg beat Cicenas, 6-1, 6-2. Faulk dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Phillips, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4, and Yasuo lost to Malet, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 6 court. Diepraam earned a victory over Chan, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. Last to finish was Sceats, who outlasted Roxas in a two hour plus marathon, 7-6, 7-6, at the No. 3 position. Junior Derrick Lajola did not play, due to an injury.
The Rainbow Warriors next match will be against St. Mary's of California, next Thursday, at the UH Tennis Complex.
