RENO, Nev. - The Hawai'i men's basketball team remained winless in Reno against Nevada after a 73-55 loss, Saturday, in a Western Athletic Conference match-up at the Lawlor Events Center. The Rainbow Warriors (10-7, 4-3 WAC) dropped their fifth road game of the season and seventh WAC road contest dating back to last season.
The Wolf Pack (15-5, 5-3) used a 15-2 run in the first half to build a 15-point lead and 21-3 surge in the second half to break open the game. The 'Bows closed to seven early in the second half but could not get closer than that the rest of the way.
Guard Marcelus Kemp led the Wolf Pack with 21 points while forward Nick Fazekas added 19 points and 17 rebounds, pushing his season total to 56 points and 32 rebounds in two games against UH.
The 'Bows were led by guard Matt Lojeski's 15 points. Forward Julian Sensley added 11 points but struggled from the field missing eight of 12 attempts. Center Chris Botez provided a lift off the bench with 10 points and four rebounds.
The Wolf Pack had a 40-to-24 rebounding advantage and limited UH to 1-of-10 shooting from 3-point range.
Nevada opened the game with an 11-5 advantage and pushed its lead to 21-11 with 7:50 left in the first half. The 'Bows answered back with eight straight points, including back-to-back buckets by Lojeski to trim the deficit to two.
But Kemp got hot and drained consecutive 3-pointers extending the Wolf Pack's lead to 27-19. Nevada's lead was 36-23 at the half after closing out the period on a 15-4 run. The 'Bows shot 34.4 percent from the field and misfired on all five 3-point attempts. The Pack shot 56.6 percent and out-rebounded UH, 22-13.
UH scored the first six points of the second half to close to within seven. But the Wolf Pack responded with a 21-3 run and had their largest lead of the game at 71-45 with 3:38 remaining.
The 'Bows continue their road trip at Utah State, Monday, Jan. 30. Tip-off is set for 10:00 p.m. MST at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum.
