SANTA CLARA - In the second dual match of the California road trip, the Santa Clara Broncos defeated the University of Hawai`i men's tennis team, 4-3, Wednesday, at the Degheri Tennis Center. The setback is the second straight match that the Rainbow Warriors (0-2) lost by the slimmest of margins.
The Broncos captured the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. Santa Clara's Jan Macek and Bobby Rasmussen came from behind to defeat Rainbow Warrior seniors Ryan Sceats and Jarrod Diepraam, 8-5, at the No. 1 position. Freshman Sascha Heinemann and junior Derrick Lajola lost, 8-2, to Kevin McQuaid and Blane Shields at No.2. The lone UH win came from senior Bryon Weinberg and freshman Jeff Fitch, who beat Brian Brogan and former Punahou standout Chris Iwamura, 8-6, at the No. 3 court.
The Rainbow Warriors and Broncos split the six singles matches. UH took the matches at the No. 1, 2, and 3 courts, while Santa Clara won the No. 4, 5, and 6 matches. The match clinching 4th team point for the Broncos came at the No. 5 court where Rasmussen defeated Diepraam, 6-1, 7-5. Soon after, Sceats defeated Shields at the No. 3 court, 6-1, 7-6, to narrow the team score.
In the other matches, Brogan defeated Lajola 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4 and Fitch dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Tommy Hicks at No. 6. Heinemann beat Macek 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1, and at No. 2 Weinberg defeated McQuaid in an thrilling 7-6, 7-6 decision.
"We could have won this match today," UH head coach John Nelson said. "The doubles point slipped away from us. We should have had that."
