SAN FRANCISCO - In the first dual match of the 2006 University of Hawai`i men's tennis season, the San Francisco Dons defeated the Rainbow Warriors, 4-3, Monday, at the Olympic Club.
UH started off the match well by winning two of the three doubles matches to capture the doubles point. Seniors Ryan Sceats and Jarrod Diepraam defeated Falko Huettenberger and Fernando Rodriguez 8-4 at the No. 1 court. Senior Bryon Weinberg and Freshman Jeff Fitch topped Rafael Corazza and Greg Hom 8-5, at the No. 3 court.
However, the Dons won four of the six singles matches to earn the dual match victory. The Rainbow Warriors and Dons split the first four singles matches at the No. 3, 4, 5, and 6 courts. Sceats defeated Rodriguez 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 and Diepraam dropped Mitch Del Rosario 7-6, 7-5 at No. 6. Junior Derrick Lajola lost to Thong Tu 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 and senior Chad Faulk dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to C. Kramer at No. 5.
The dual match came down to the last two singles matches at the No. 1 and 2 courts. In an exciting three-set match at the No. 1 court, freshman Sascha Heinemann was defeated by Matthew Berry, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3. Weinberg had an opportunity to win the dual match for the Rainbow Warriors at the No. 2 court. The senior from Ontario, Canada was unable to capture the match losing to Huettenberger, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.
"It was very disappointing," UH head coach John Nelson said. "I thought we had this match won. For our first match, they played a little tougher that we did, and they were better than us today."
The Rainbow Warriors continue their California road trip with dual matches against Santa Clara on Wednesday and Stanford on Thursday.
