No. 11 Rainbow Wahine Get Quick Sweep At Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. - The No. 11 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (8-6, 2-0 WAC) swept through the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters (12-5, 0-3 WAC) 30-14, 30-18 and 33-31 at the Thomas Assembly Center Thursday.

Tara Hittle led the way, hitting .417 with 12 kills and eight digs. Sarah Mason hit .474 with 11 kills and six digs while Alicia Arnott had 10 kills, eight digs and a .476 hitting percentage. Kanoe Kamana`o had another great night with 50 assists, nine digs and three blocks. Victoria Prince added nine kills and five blocks while Ashley Watanabe ended up with 16 digs in the back row. Susie Boogaard also put up 14 digs and five blocks, defensively.

The Rainbow Wahine came out firing in their WAC road opener, as Arnott scored four of UH's first six points, pushing Hawai`i to a 6-1 lead. They continued to dominate the first game as a huge 9-1 run extended their edge to 21-8. Hittle started to get into the act late in the game, putting away four of the last five points for UH, including the game winner, giving the 'Bows the 30-14 game one victory. Hawai`i hit .486 with 21 kills in the game to LTU's .026 with seven kills.

Hawai`i again got out early on the Lady Techsters in game two, holding a 9-3 advantage. A six-point run by the Rainbow Wahine pushed it to 15-4. Louisiana Tech had a small comeback, cutting it to 20-13. But UH would not be stopped, running off five of the last six points in the second game, as a kill by Mason ended it 30-18.

Louisiana Tech put up a good fight in the third. It stayed tight with UH holding a slight 17-16 edge before Louisiana Tech ran off six-straight points to go up 22-17. Hawai`i whittled away at it before a big 4-0 run tied the score at 27. UH had three match-points before Mason put away consecutive kills to take if for the Rainbow Wahine 33-31.

The Rainbow Wahine will next head to Las Cruces, N.M., to face New Mexico State on Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. (4 p.m. HST).
