HONOLULU - After just their third 0-2 start in program history, the No. 4 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (1-2, 1-0 HAL) swept the No. 7 Southern California Women of Troy (1-2, 0-2 HAL) 30-23, 30-27 and 33-31 in front of a crowd of 7,247 at UH's home-opener in the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic Thursday.
Victoria Prince had a great match, putting away a match-high 17 kills and eight blocks while hitting .517. Alicia Arnott added 12 kills and 11 digs while Jamie Houston put up 10 kills. Susie Boogaard and Ashley Watanabe led the effort defensively with 15 and 14 digs, respectively, while Kanoe Kamana`o had 47 assists, seven digs and three blocks.
The Women of Troy looked in control early on as a four-point run put them ahead 8-3. USC kept their edge at 14-9 before the Rainbow Wahine ran off six-straight points on the serve of Prince to give UH their first lead at 15-14. USC took back the lead at 18-17 before Hawai`i took control, running off eight points, including two aces by Watanabe, putting them up 25-18. From there, it was academic as UH took game on 30-23. Prince ended the game hitting a perfect 1.000 with five kills on five swings.
USC again jumped out early in game two, taking a 8-4 lead. But UH again came back, going on a 4-0 run to take a 14-13 lead. The two teams stayed tight from then on, with the point-differential staying within three points. But the Rainbow Wahine made the plays late, including a big three-point run that made it 28-25, propelling UH to a 30-27 victory in the second game.
Game three was tight from the start, going back and forth until a 4-0 run put UH ahead 15-11 at the media timeout. But USC rebounded quickly, tying the score at 17 with a 6-2 run. The teams traded small rallies for most of the rest of the third game with the Women of Troy holding game point at 29-28. After a UH timeout, Prince took over, scoring Hawai`i's final five points, on four kills, a block and an ace that ended game three at 33-31.
The Rainbow Wahine will face No. 5 Penn State tomorrow at 7 p.m. in a rematch of the teams' AVCA/NACWAA Volleyball Showcase consolation match last week. USC will face Western Michigan in the day match at 4:30 p.m.
