OMAHA, Neb. - The No. 4 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (0-2) fell to the No. 5 Penn State Nittany Lions (1-1) 27-30, 26-30 and 18-30 in the consolation match of the AVCA/NACWAA Volleyball Showcase at the Qwest Center.
Victoria Prince again led the way for UH, hitting .500 with 14 kills and three blocks. Susie Boogaard added a 10-kill, 10-dig match while Jamie Houston had eight kills and three digs in her first collegiate start.
Penn State and Hawai`i traded sideouts early in the first game with a late three-point PSU run giving them a slight 15-14 edge at the media timeout. Neither team was able to run away, but another small 3-0 run by the Lions, capped by a solo block by Sam Tortorello, gave Penn State the 30-27 game one victory.
The Rainbow Wahine came out firing in the second game, going up 5-1. They took their lead as high as 19-12 before PSU started a huge comeback, going on a 17-6 run to get to game point at 29-25. Hawai`i held them off for a point as Houston pounded a kill to get it to 29-26. But the Lions were able to hold them off, as Christa Harmotto put away the final kill, putting Penn State up 2-0 with a 30-26 win in game two.
UH showed a little life at the start of the third game, going up 5-2. But that would be it for Hawai`i, as Penn State reeled off an 11-2 run, including seven-straight points, giving the Lions a 12-7 edge. PSU continued to pour it on, keeping a double-digit lead for much of the rest of the game, finally taking it 30-18.
The Rainbow Wahine will now head back to the islands and host the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Classic from Aug. 31 to Sept. 4. UH's first match will be against No. 7 Southern California at 7 p.m. on Sept. 1. The first match of the classic will be between No. 5 Penn State and No. 7 USC at 7 p.m. on Aug. 31.
