BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 1 UCLA doubled up No. 4 Hawai`i, 10-5, in the semifinals of the 2005 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at the University of California's Spieker Aquatic Complex today.
The Bruins improved to a perfect 29-0, while the Rainbow Wahine fell to 20-8. It is the third loss to UCLA this season. It also was UH's first loss in the MPSF Championships sending them to the third place game Sunday against No. 2 USC, who fell to No. 3 Stanford today, 9-5.
UH took an early 1-0 lead just 61 seconds into the game on Anna Sieprath's goal. But the Bruins stormed back with four unanswered goals in a span of two minutes and 15 seconds. UH closed to within 4-2 at the end of the first quarter on All-American Beth Novick's score.
UCLA added two more goals in the second to lead 6-2 at the half and added the first goal of the third quarter to lead by five.
However, UH pounded the net for three unanswered goals of their own by Malia Tarayao, Novick, and Iefke Van Belkum - to close to within 7-5 with 5:02 remaining in the fourth. But another three-goal outburst by the Bruins in a clump of three minutes and 29 seconds capped the scoring.
UH goalie Meike De Nooy was busy, coming up with 11 saves on the afternoon.
The fourth ranked Rainbow Wahine take on No. 2 USC Sunday at 11 a.m. HST (2 p.m. PST) in the third-place game. The game will be shown live on ESPNU.
