SAN JOSE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (21-23, 8-10 WAC) completed the sweep of the San Jose State Spartans (20-18-1, 9-9) 4-3 in 11 innings on a solo home run by
Matthew Inouye in the top of the 11th inning at Blethen Field Saturday.
Darrell Fisherbaugh (4-1) closed the game with 2.2 scoreless innings to get the win, while Randy Waite came on in relief to take the loss.
The sweep marked UH's first road sweep since sweeping UH-Hilo from May 11-13, 2001, and the first mainland sweep since April 29 through May 1, 1999, when they swept Utah.
Adam Roberts had a 1-for-4 game with two RBI and a double. Derek DuPree had a 3-for-4 game while Isaac Omura went 2-for-5 with a run. Joseph Spiers also added a 1-for-2 day with one RBI.
The Spartans got on the board first, scoring a single run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 edge. The Rainbows answered in the sixth, tying the game on a sacrifice fly by Spiers, scoring Esteban Lopez.
It stayed tied until the bottom of the seventh, as San Jose State scored on a RBI-single by Anthony Contreras, putting the Spartans ahead 2-1. UH had a chance to tie it in the eighth, but left runners on first and second, keeping them behind.
The Rainbows were then able to work their magic in the top of the ninth. Omura got on with a lead-off single, then was moved over to second with a sacrifice bunt by Jonathon Hee. Daniel Magana singled to center, setting up runners on the corners for Roberts. The firstbaseman then hit a double down the left line, bringing in both Omura and Magana to put UH ahead 3-2, going into the bottom of the ninth.
But the Spartans wouldn't go away that easily, as Nate Corrick drove in David Pierson, tying it up at 3-3, sending the game into extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, the `Bows got runners on first and second with one out and Omura up to bat. Omura hit a ball up the middle that looked like it may have scored a run or two. But Contreras came up with a big play, snagging the ball, spinning, and throwing out Omura at first, disallowing any Rainbow runs. Omura then got a little bit of revenge in the bottom of the 10th, turning a 4-3 double play to end a SJSU rally, sending the game to the 11th.
In the top of the inning, Inouye came up with his big blast, whacking a solo shot over the left field wall, which proved to be the game-winner, giving Hawai`i the 4-3 victory.
The Rainbows will now head home for a two-week homestand, starting with a series vs. Nevada, running from April 28-30 at the Les Murakami Stadium.
