Bryant's Masterpiece Gives 'Bows 1-0 Win Over San Jose State

Box Score

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Stephen Bryant tossed a two-hit masterpiece to lead the University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (19-23, 6-10 WAC) past the San Jose State Spartans (20-16-1, 9-7) 1-0 in gusty conditions at Blethen Field Friday. Bryant (6-3) pitched 8.2 innings, allowing just three baserunners with four strikeouts to get the win. Steven Wright recorded the final out of the game to get his third save of the year. Shane Brechmann (1-2) pitched well for the Spartans, but took the loss.

Derek DuPree went 1-for-3 with the only run of the game. Nathan Thurber had a 2-for-4 game while Isaac Omura and Joseph Spiers both added singles.

Bryant retired the first nine batters of the game before SJSU's Anthony Contreras hit a single to left that fell just short of Nathan Thurber's glove. Bryant then proceeded to mow down the next nine batters before walking the leadoff hitter to start the eighth. The only other baserunner allowed was Ryan Angel, who doubled to left center in the bottom of the ninth.

Hawai`i was also kept off the board in the first seven innings, although they had their chances, leaving three runners in scoring position in the first three innings.

They finally got on the board in the eighth. DuPree opened the inning with a single to left before Spiers walked to get runners on first and second. Erik Ammon then sacrificed the two runners to second and third. The Spartans then intentionally walked Omura to load the bases before an error by San Jose State's catcher allowed DuPree to score, giving UH the only run of the game.

The two teams will play again tomorrow at Blethen Field at 1 p.m., with the series finale at noon on Sunday.
