Rainbow Wahine Eliminated From WAC Championships

HONOLULU - SMU advanced to the semifinals of the 2005 Western Athletic Conference Championship, after a 4-0 victory over host Hawai`i, Thursday, on Day 1 of the tournament held at UH Tennis Complex. The Mustangs will face with the Fresno State in the semifinals, where they have advanced to for the sixth consecutive year.

The Rainbow Wahine end their season 9-15. Four-year seniors Lauren Fitzgerald, Paige Mainor, Kimberly Curtis, and Justine Boutet played their final matches for UH.

SMU, ranked No. 68 nationally, won the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles courts to take a 1-0 lead entering singles competition. The Mustangs then captured the Nos. 2, 3, and 4 singles spots in straight sets for the 4-0 team victory. Jenny Langer, Jennifer Chay and Allison Leuszler posted singles wins for SMU.

Prior to the match being called, the Rainbow Wahine were ahead in the third set of their respective matches at the Nos. 1 and 5 courts.

The tournament continues throughout the weekend.
