HONOLULU - The Hawai`i men's tennis team concluded its regular season with a hard fought 5-2 loss to No. 30 Boise State, Wednesday, at the UH Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors end the regular season at 6-14.
The four-hour match was both teams' final tune-up for the Western Athletic Conference Championships beginning on Friday. UH is the No. 6 seed while Boise State is the top seed in the seven-team tournament.
The Broncos captured the doubles point by sweeping all three matches. The No. 2 court featured a close tiebreaker won by Honolulu's Ikaika Jobe and Matias Silva over Jarrod Diepraam and Ryan Sceats, 9-8 (4).
In singles play, UH gave the Broncos a fight, winning two of the six matches. Sceats spoiled Jobe's homecoming with a 7-5, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (6) super-tiebreaker victory at the No. 3 court. At No. 2, Bryon Weinberg rallied to defeat Thomas Schoeck, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2).
At the featured court, Dalibor Ptak extended Luke Shields to a third set before falling, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
The Rainbow Warriors will face third-seeded SMU at 12:00 p.m. on Friday in one of three quarterfinal round matches at the UH Tennis Complex.
