Rainbow Wahine In Sixth At WAC Championships After Two Rounds

KUNA, Idaho- Rebounding from their sluggish start on day one, the University of Hawai`i women's golf team shot 303 in the second round of the 2005 Western Athletic Conference Championships to move ahead of UTEP and take over sixth place. The Rainbow Wahine have a 36-hole score of 633 and trail fourth-place Fresno State by 13 strokes as they head into the third and final round at the Falcon Crest golf course in Kuna, Idaho.

For the second day in a row, sophomore Sara Odelius and freshman Xyra Suyetsugu recorded identical scores, but, fortunately for UH, the pair shaved seven strokes apiece off their first round totals. Odelius and Suyetsugu, who began the day tied for 23rd, moved 11 spots up the individual leader board into a tie for 12th after firing two-over 74s in the second round, which gave them a 36-hole total of 155. Sophomore Dale Gammie climbed five spots into a tie for 22nd after shooting a three-over 75. Junior Tara Chappell remains tied for 34th after shooting an eight-over 80, which brought her two-day total to 165. Newcomer Roslyn Folk moved into 38th place after an SMU and a Boise State golfer were disqualified for not turning in their scorecards. Folk, a junior from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, shot a 10-over 82 on the second day and has a 36-hole total of 170.

San Jose State took control of first place after they shot a tournament low 294 as a team in the second round. The Spartans, who lead second-place Tulsa by one stroke, have a team total of 595 after 36 holes. San Jose State's Jenelle Gomez moved into first place after firing a one-under 71 in the second. The WAC Championships will resume Wednesday morning at 8:30 a.m. for the third and final round.
