Honolulu - The Fighting Irish downed the UH softball team 9-1 in the third game of the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament. Hawai'i lost in five innings for the first time this season. Notre Dame (9-7) ended with 12 hits and were aided by four Hawai'i errors.
UH jumped out on top in the bottom of the first inning. Tara Harbert, who had reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning, was driven home on a single to left by Louise Harriden.
But the Fighting Irish (9-7) came battling back in the top of the second. Notre Dame scored five runs on five hits, a fielder's choice, and two errors - all unearned. They then extended their lead to nine in the fourth. The Fighting Irish amassed 12 hits, the most allowed by Hawai'i this season.
Heather Booth went the distance, throwing a two-hitter, striking out three and walking only two.
Hawai'i was held to two hits, one coming in the first inning by Harriden and the other coming in the last inning by pinch hitter Dena DePompa.
The Rainbow Wahine now take on the Fighting Camels of Campbell at 6pm in tomorrow's nightcap.

After three scoreless innings, the Fighting Camels got on the board first in the fourth. Stephanie Pappas hit a double to leftcenter that knocked in Jessica Huffman who had reached base earlier on an error.
Virginia responded in the top of the fifth with a couple of runs, taking the lead 2-1. After allowing two Caviliers to reach base, the Camels put in Lauren Caviness in relief of Lexi Meyers. Caviness got the next two outs, but then started having problems finding the strikezone, walking or hitting the next three batters, pushing home the Cavaliers' only runs of the game.
But the Fighting Camels came back in the bottom of the fifth. After getting two quick outs, Campbell started a furious rally in which Holly Harris started with a single down the leftfield line. Chelsea Gates then singled pinch runner Samantha Crews who had stolen second.The winning run came on a double to leftcenter by Huffman that drove in Gates, making the final score 4-2
Caviness picked up the win in relief, and Coty Tolar took the loss for the Cavaliers.

The Fighting Irish jumped to an early lead right off the bat. In the top of the first, Notre Dame score three runs on five hits, a sacrifice fly and a walk. They extended their lead to 5-0 in the third, when Meagan Ruthrauff smacked a home run to dead center. Kellie Middleton followed with a bunt single and eventually scored off a Gessica Hufnagle single up the middle. The Irish capped off their scoring when Stephanie Brown crossed the plate when Ruthrauff knocked in her third RBI on the day off her second sacrifice fly to the outfield.
Steffany Stenglein, Carrie Wisen, and Kenya Femmeler combined on a three-hitter. The only Campbell run came in the bottom of the seventh.
Notre Dame had several leading hitters. Stephanie Brown was 3-3 with two runs scored; Mallorie Lenn was 2-3 with one run, Ruthrauff was 1-2 with two sacrifice flies, an homerun and three RBI; Middleton was 2-2 with two runs, and an RBI; Hufnagle was 2-3 with an RBI.
The Fighting Camels were led by Huffman who went 2-3 with a double.
