Hawai'i Holds Off Vikings 2-1

Check Schedule Below for Sunday, March 6 Schedule of Games

Honolulu - The Rainbow Wahine softball team (9-8) defeated the Portland State Vikings (4-7) in a tight game, 2-1 in the feature game of the Pepsi-Cola Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament's third day of competition.

Hawai'i jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. Kaulana Gould led-off the top of the third with a single to leftfield. She was pushed to third when Tara Harbert had a bunt single and the PSU second baseman overthrew first, allowing the runners to advance to second and third respectively. Denise Dahlberg then came through with a deep fly ball to dead center that tested the limits of RWSS. Vikings' centerfielder made a nice over-the-shoulder catch at the wall. Dalberg's sacrifice fly allowed Gould to score easily from third.

In the fifth, Portland State tied the score at 1-1 when Lewis hit a towering home run over the leftfield wall. It was her second homer of the day, with her first one coming in their earlier game against Delaware State.

The Rainbow Wahine responded in the top of the sixth. Tyleen Tausaga hit a single up the mjiddle to lead things off. Jennifer Hackett came in as a pinch runner. Two PSU errors loaded the bases and Kristi Yoshizawa drew a walk that forced the winning run across the plate.

Shannon Tabion threw a complete game, surrendering four hits, walking two and striking out five.
