SAN FRANCISCO - The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team displayed strong doubles play, but faltered on the singles side, in suffering a 5-2 loss to San Francisco on Sunday afternoon at Golden Gate Park. With the loss, the Hawai`i fell to 3-9 on the season, and returns home after dropping both matches during their California road trip.
Hawai`i opened the match well, taking two of three doubles contests, including a convincing 8-2 win for the team of Ryan Sceats and Bryon Weinberg over USF's Philip Riise-Hansen and Andrew Bertolina. Sceats' continued his winning ways in singles play, earning his seventh consecutive singles win in straight-sets over USF's Andrew Hogan.
However, the other Rainbow Warriors struggled against the Dons in singles play, as USF swept the other five individual matches. Hawai`i's Derrick Lajola won the first set of his match against USF's Greg Hom before falling in three sets, while Weinberg took the second set of his match against Riise-Hansen to a tiebreaker, but eventually lost 6-4, 7-6.
The Rainbow Warriors return home for a four-match home stand, beginning against Bloomsburg University on Friday, Mar. 10, at the UH Tennis Complex. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
