No.2 California Defeats Hawai'i 2-0

Honolulu - No.2 California (14-1) downed the Rainbow Wahine softball team (8-7) in the feature match of the Pepsi-Cola Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament's day two. Golden Bear pitcher Kristina Thorson threw the complete game shut-out, allowing only four hits while striking out six.

The Golden Bears were able to link their hits together to score single runs in the second and fifth inning. Their first run of the game came when Cal shortstop Chelsea Spencer smacked a double to the right centerfield fence. The next batter, Julie Meyer drove her in with a single back up the middle.

In the fifth, it was third baseman Jeana Gevas who sent a shot up the middle, and two batters later, centerfielder Kaleo Eldredge hit a two-out single to drive in Jessica Vernaglia, who entered as a pinch runner for Gevas for the insurance run.

Senior pitcher Melissa Coogan also threw a complete game, giving up six hits, striking out five and walking none. Second baseman Noelle Izumi had three of Hawai'i's four hits on the night. Catcher Denise Dahlberg had the only other hit for the Rainbow Wahine, and was the only runner to reach third base.

Hawai'i will take on No.7 Alabama at 5pm and Portland State at 7pm tomorrow for day three of the tournament.
