HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (9-8, 2-3 FHT) upset the No. 22 Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin Cajuns (14-1, 4-1 FHT) 12-1 in the final game of the First Hawaii Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament Saturday.
Justin Costi (1-2) pitched 8.0 innings, giving up just four hits and one run to get the victory. C.J. Blue took the loss for Louisiana. The attendance for the final game of the tournament was 2,819.
Rocky Russo led the way for UH, going 2-for-4 with a double and three runs. Jose Castaneda also came up big, going 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Isaac Omura added a 2-for-5 game with two RBI and a run while Joseph Spiers was 2-for-4 with one RBI and a stolen base.
The Rainbows jumped out early in the second inning as Adam Roberts hit a two-run double to deep center, scoring Russo and Jeff Piaskowski to put UH up 2-0. Spiers and Omura later drove run in the inning, making the score 4-0 at the end of the second.
The 'Bows added another run in the sixth before the Cajuns got their only highlight of the game as Dallas Morris blasted a solo home run to left-center in the top of the seventh.
But Hawai`i wasn't done as Piaskowski drove in a run in the seventh before the Rainbows put up six in the eighth, making the final score 12-1.
Louisiana had already clinched the tournament title by virtue of a victory of Wichita State, as both teams finished with a 4-1 tournament record.
The Rainbows will next face No. 8 Florida State for a three-game series starting Friday, March 10, at 6:35 p.m.
