Second Half Spurt Propels Rainbow Wahine Past Aztecs, 9-5

HONOLULU - All-American Beth Novick scored a season-high four goals as the fourth ranked University of Hawai`i women's water polo team ran its winning streak to eight today knocking off No. 12 San Diego State, 9-5, at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

The Rainbow Wahine got on the scoreboard early at 5:51 in the first on a shot by Iefke Van Belkum from the left side on a crossing pass from Monika Kruszona. Kruszona made it 2-0 as she received a pass at the 2-meter mark from Amy Logan and pivoted and whipped it past SDSU goalie Sarah Kilgore. Novick picked up UH's third goal at 3:28 to give UH a quick 3-0 start. But the Aztecs trimmed the deficit to one on a 2-meter goal by Becca Ur at 2:19, and Rachel Serna's power-play goal a minute later.

The Aztecs picked up the only goal in the second quarter with 2:14 left on a 4-meter penalty shot by Serna to knot it at three apiece at halftime.

UH recaptured the lead for good with 5:58 in the third quarter when Kruszona was left all alone on the right side, and found the lower right corner of the net after receiving a crossing pass from Van. UH took advantage of a power play to go up 5-3 as Novick whistled in a shot from the 2-meter area on an assist by Van Belkum.

SDSU pulled to within one when Stacy Werner scored on top from 6-meters out at 4:47 remaining. UH's Anna Sieprath found the lower portion of the net on a 6-on-5 with 3:36 left to give UH a 6-4 lead. SDSU picked up another penalty shot by Serna to cut UH's lead to one. UH would then go on a scoring spree netting three goals in a span of one minute and 21 seconds to cap the scoring. Novick wheeled in a shot at 2:40 on the clock then netted her four goal on a spin shot in the middle on as assist from Van Belkum. Kruszona added her third score at 1:19 on a dish inside from Novick.

UH goalie Meike De Nooy was very busy as she made eight saves. SDSU goalie Kilgore had four stops.

Hawai`i improves to 12-6 overall and 7-2 in the MPSF, while San Diego State falls to 10-11 and 2-7 in the MPSF. With the win, UH completed its six-game home stand with an unblemished 6-0 mark. Hawai`i's final home game of the season is April 24 against No. 2 ranked USC at 4 p.m. at the Duke.
