No. 5 Hawai`i Knocks Off No. 3 Long Beach State, 8-7

HONOLULU - Fifth ranked Hawai`i pulled a mild upset today defeating No. 3 Long Beach State, 8-7, at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Hawai`i improved to 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the MPSF, while Long Beach State fell to 15-4 and 7-1 in the MPSF.

LBSU's Cassie Acevedo put the 49ers up 1-0 as she skipped in a shot on the left side at the 5:46 mark. UH's Anna Sieprath tied the score at 2:07 as she whipped in a shot in the lower right side. UH took its first lead at the 1:22 mark as Monika Kruszona rifled a shot in the right side on a power play. But the lead was short-lived as Acevedo added her second goal with 55 seconds left. However, UH's Kruszona wasn't finished as she powered her second goal through with 31 seconds remaining to give UH a 3-2 lead after one quarter.

The 49ers' Jeanine Jackson tied it with 6:11 in the second quarter. UH's Kruszona picked up a hat-trick with her third score with 26 remaining, but LBSU tied the game with four seconds before the half on a shot on top by Alison Braden.

Only two goals were scored in the third quarter as the 49ers took the early lead when Drue Wawrzynski got open in the 2-meter area and found the left lower corner. UH then took advantage of a penalty shot as Iefke Van Belkum tied it at five at 5:08.

LBSU took a 6-5 advantage on Acevedo's third goal at 4:09 on a power play. UH's Beth Novick tied as she beat LBSU goalie Bri Hawkins on a shot from the left side finding the upper weak side right corner. The 49ers recaptured the lead on a 2-meter penalty shot by Wawrzynski. Van Belkum tied it on a power play at 2:11 mark at seven apiece.

UH could not take advantage of a golden opportunity as Sieprath dribbled inside the 2-meter mark but was stripped of the ball giving LBSU the ball at 1:08, taking their third and final timeout. LBSU had the 35-second shot clock expire and UH's De Nooy found Van Belkum streaking down the left side who skipped in a shot with 39 seconds to go. LBSU had one final chance but UH goalie Meike De Nooy blocked a shot with 10 seconds left and the 49ers couldn't get another shot on goal as time expired.
