UH Beats Wolfpack, 8-4

The Rainbow Wahine defeated Nevada in a non-conference game as part of the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament. Hawaii scored eight runs on 15 hits.

Hawaii scored in the bottom of the first. Denise Dahlberg reached on an error on the throw from shortstop. Tyleen Tausaga followed with a base hit up the middle, who was followed by Ashley Ruff who hit a base hit up the middle to score Dahlberg.

UH added to their lead, scoring runs in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. In the third Hawaii hit back-to-back doubles by Tausaga and Ruff. Ruff's double drove in Jennifer Hackett who was pinch running for Tausaga. Dena DePompa then followed with a single to the third baseman. She later got caught in a rundown between first and second allowing Ruff to score from third.

In the fourth, Noelle Izumi hit a double to left field and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Tracie Uchima. Tausaga led off the fifth inning with a base hit to right field. Ruff followed with a walk. DePompa hit into a fielder's choice that forced Ruff out at second. Kate Robinson then pinch hit and hit a grounder to short that was mishandled by the shortstop, scoring Tausaga from third. DePompa scored on a single by Tara Harbert, and Robinson scored on a single by Uchima. UH capped off their scoring with a home run to centerfield by Tausaga in the sixth.

Nevada scored one run in the fourth and added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh off two walks, a base hit from Amanda Wise, and a three-run triple hit by Cindy Elkins.

Tausaga went 4-4 on the night, scoring two runs and knocking one in. Ruff was 3-3 with a walk, a run scored and two RBI; DePompa was 2-3 and a run scored, and Harbert went 3-3 with one RBI.

Melissa Coogan picked up the win, throwing a complete game with seven strike outs and two walks.

They now face Virginia in the nightcap at 7pm.

The Fighting Irish (11-7) picked up their fourth win of the Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament over the Nevada Wolfpack (8-12). The win places them as the #1 seed and they will play in the 11:00 am game vs. the winner of Game #1 (Seed #4 vs. Seed #5).

Notre Dame exploded for six runs in the top of the fourth inning, racking up seven singles in the inning. They tacked on another run in the top of the sixth to make the score 7-0.

Nevada responded and went down swinging, getting three consecutive hits, including a double by Cindy Elkins. Elkins scored the Wolfpacks' only run when pinch hitter Kari Stockstill drove her in with a base hit up the middle.

The Fighting Irish, had four batters with multiple hits. Kellie Middleton was 2-4 with an RBI; Meagan Ruthrauff had a strong game, going 3-4 with a double and three RBI, Mallorie Lenn was 2-4 with a run scored; and Katie Laing hit 2-4 with one run scored and one RBI.

Heather Booth took a no-hitter into the fourth inning, but Jiliane Harfiel broke it up in the fourth. Booth ended up with the complete-game victory, striking out six and walking two. For the Nevada, Candice Rainwater took the loss, giving up five runs on seven hits, striking out three and walking one.
