'Bows Fall To Hornets In 13 Innings

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (7-6) fell to the Sacramento State Hornets (6-6) 8-5 in 13 innings on the first night of the First Hawaii Title Rainbow Baseball Tournament. Larry Ellenbrook took the loss for UH while Marshall Plouffe got the win for Sacramento State. The attendance for the first day of the tournament was 2,360.

Joseph Spiers had a big game, going 4-for-6 with a run, a double and one RBI. Isaac Omura, Daniel Magana, Matthew Inouye and Rocky Russo all added two-hit games. Darrell Fisherbaugh pitched well in relief, giving up no runs on just two hits and a walk in 3.2 innings while striking out six.

The Hornets got the win on a three-run home run by Brian Conradi in the top of the 13th inning, after coming back to tie the game with three runs in the seventh and one more in the ninth.

Sacramento State opened the scoring in the second before the Rainbow bats came up with all five runs between the third and fifth innings.

In the third, UH got a run on a RBI-double by Magana. They then followed it up with three runs, two driven in by Esteban Lopez and Spiers and another on a Hornet error, in the fourth, making it 4-1.

Jose Castaneda added another run in the fifth, driving in Luis Avila, to make it 5-1.

The Rainbows will next host UC Davis tomorrow in the nightcap of the tournament schedule. The first game will pit South Florida against Louisiana-Lafayette at 10:30 a.m. The Bulls beat UC Davis, 6-4, in the first game of the day while the Ragin Cajuns won 19-3 over Wichita State in the second game of the day. Sacramento State will face Wichita State in the second game at 2:30 p.m. before the UH game at 6:30 p.m.
