Warriors Snap Streak, Defeat IPFW

HONOLULU - Behind a total team effort, the University of Hawai'i men's tennis team ended a five-match losing streak with a convincing 7-0 victory over IPFW, Sunday morning at the UH Tennis Complex. With the win, Hawai'i improved to 2-5 on the season.

Junior Ryan Sceats continued his hot streak, capturing a singles win at No. 3 over IPFW's Carlos Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-1, while pairing with Dalibor Ptak to defeat the Mastadons' Landry Nzudie and Nabil Mourad Filho, 8-4. Ptak also earned a singles victory when Nzudie retired after dropping the first set of their match, 6-2.

A shuffling of the Hawai`i roster paid off, as Yasuo Sakurai captured his first singles win of the season at No. 6, defeating IPFW's Ryan Orr, 6-1, 6-3. Meanwhile, the pair of Derrick Lajola and Jamie Migia earned their first-ever win as a doubles team by an 8-6 margin over Sam Rocke and Daniel Jackson.

"Our mental energy was much better," Warrior head coach John Nelson said. "The switch really paid off, and our team responded well to the adjustments we made."

Hawai`i hits the road for their next match, taking on No. 53 Oklahoma in Las Vegas, Nev., on Saturday, Feb. 19. The next home match for the Rainbow Warriors is Thursday, Mar. 10, against Bloomsburg University at the UH Tennis Complex.
