HONOLULU - An impressive return to action by junior
Ryan Sceats was not enough, as the University of Hawai'i men's tennis team dropped a tight match, 4-3, to Gustavus Adolphus, Saturday afternoon, at the UH Tennis Complex. The heartbreaking loss dropped the Rainbow Warriors to 1-5 on the season.
Sceats, who had missed Hawai`i's last two dual matches due to illness, made a strong showing with a singles victory at No.3 over Gustavus' Jesse Brauer, 6-2, 6-2, and a No. 1 doubles win with Dalibor Ptak over Adam Morgan and Brett Morse-Karzen, 8-3. Hawai`i also managed to capture singles wins at No. 2, with Bryon Weinberg defeating Morgan, 7-5, 6-3, and at No. 4, as Chad Faulk stopped Morse-Karzen, 6-4, 6-0.
However, Hawai`i could not close the deal in several close matches that would have given the Rainbow Warriors the victory. Derrick Lajola and Jamie Migia took both their singles contests to three sets before falling, while the pair of Weinberg and Yasuo Sakurai dropped a tight 8-6 decision to Gustavus' Ben Lundell and Brauer.
"We let this one slip away," Warrior head coach John Nelson said. "This kind of experience is all about learning. We're lucky we play tomorrow and can see how much we learned today."
Up next for Hawai`i is a Sunday showdown against IPFW. First serve at the UH Tennis Complex is set for 9 a.m.
