Rainbow Warriors Hand BYU-Hawai`i First Loss

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team put together an impressive showing en route to a 5-2 victory over previously unbeaten BYU-Hawai`i, the No. 9 ranked team in NCAA Division II, this afternoon at the UH Tennis Complex. By winning its second straight match at home, Hawai`i improves to 3-5 on the season, while BYU-Hawai`i drops to 4-1.

Hawai`i was led by reigning WAC player of the week Ryan Sceats, who won his fifth consecutive match at No.3 with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over BYU-Hawai`i's Junyoung Kim. Meanwhile, Hawai`i's Dalibor Ptak and Bryon Weinberg earned hard-fought three-set victories over Dorian Porada and Dillon Porter, respectively. Both Porada and Porter were ranked in the Top-40 of the latest Division II singles rankings.

Sceats also paced the Hawai`i effort in doubles, pairing with Jarrod Diepraam to take an 8-1 win over the team of Porter and Kim. Hawai`i took the team point with a win at No. 3 by Weinberg and Chad Faulk, who defeated the Seasiders' Jeffrey Rice and Jakub Huza, 8-5.

Hawai`i hits the road for a three-match trip through California, starting with a Mar. 4 meeting with Santa Clara. The Rainbow Warriors' next home match is against Bloomsburg University on Friday, Mar. 10, at the UH Tennis Complex. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
