WAHIAWA, Oahu - The University of Hawai'i Warrior golf team, who are hosting the 2005 John Burns Intercollegiate, shot an even 288 in the first round of the tournament to end the day in 10th place. New Mexico's Spencer Levin, the number one ranked collegiate golfer in the country by Golfweek/Sagarin, currently leads the 120-man field after shooting a seven-under-par 65 after 18-holes. New Mexico and UNLV shot 274 to finish day one tied for first place out of the 22-team field.
Sophomore golfer Pierre-Henri Soero fired a three-under 69, which tied him for 12th place. Junior Travis Toyama shot an even 72 and wrapped-up the day tied for 33rd. Also competing on the Hawai`i "A" team are senior Kellen-Floyd Asao (73, T 49), junior Jarett Hamamoto (74, T69) and sophomore Cody Wolfenbarger (77, T97).
Freshman Ryan Perez, representing Hawai`i's "B" team, opened the tournament with a one-under 71, which tied him for 27th. Also golfing on the "B" team are senior Ben Douglas (74, T 69), freshman Chase Bingham (78, T 106), senior Manarii Gauthier (80, T 108) and freshman Billy-Bob Hoyt (81, T 115). The UH "B" team is tied for 20th place after one round. Junior golfer Jordan Belton, of Surrey, British Columbia, shot a 14-over 86 and sits in 120th place after round one. Belton is playing as an individual, which means his scores will not count for either the "A" team or "B" team.
Action will resume tomorrow morning with the second round of golf on the on the 6,917-yard Leilehua Golf Course at 7:30 A.M. with a shotgun start.
