PALO ALTO, Calif. - No. 7 Hawai`i lost 9-5 this afternoon at No. 3 Stanford in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Avery Aquatic Center.
The Rainbow Wahine (1-1, 1-1 MPSF) began with a quick shot only 40 seconds into the game by Brittany Dames to give them a 1-0 lead. A little over a minute later, Stanford's managed an outside shot to tie the game 1-1, scoring again a minute later bringing the Cardinal to a lead of 2-1.
Beth Novick scored at the 2:54 mark to tie the game at two apiece before Stanford's Katie Hansen worked a physical Hawaii defender to score with only 50 seconds left in the first quarter, to bring the Cardinal ahead, 3-2.
Stanford would reel off four more unanswered goals to lead 7-3 after three quarters. UH managed two more scores in the fourth, but SU added two more to cap the scoring a 9-5 in favor of the Cardinal.
Saturday the Rainbow Wahine begins play in the Stanford Invitational with a game against USC at 11 AM and a match-up against Indiana at 7 PM. Hawai`i closes out the tournament on Sunday with a match against California at 9:30 AM before being matchup up with one more following pool play.
