HONOLULU - The No. 9 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (18-6, 12-0 WAC) swept the Idaho Vandals (13-12, 5-7) 30-18, 30-23 and 30-23 in front of 7,566 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Sarah Mason put away 12 kills and four digs with a .632 hitting percentage in just two games. Tara Hittle added 11 kills and eight digs while Victoria Prince had seven kills, seven blocks, three aces and five digs while hitting .500. Kanoe Kamana`o again played great all-around with 41 assists, eight digs and five blocks. Susie Boogaard posted a team-high 12 digs.
Hawai`i took a quick 5-1 lead to start the first game, then used a seven-point run later in the game to go up 14-6. Hittle's sixth kill of the game ran the score to 25-13 before the Rainbow Wahine eventually took it 30-18.
UH got out to a big 13-8 lead in game two, but let the Vandals back in at 13-12 and then tying it at 20-20. But that was when the Hawai`i firepower took over, scoring 10 of the next 13 points on seven kills, ending the game at 30-23 on kill by Jamie Houston. In all, UH ended the second game with 21 kills while hitting .429 as a team.
Rainbow Wahine Head Coach Dave Shoji mixed up the lineup in game three, starting Alicia Arnott, Cayley Thurlby and Kari Gregory. UH started out the third game with a 7-1 advantage and pushed it to 20-11 on Thurlby's third block of the game. The Vandals fought back with five-straight points to make it 20-16 and got within three at 23-20. But that was as close as it would get as two blocks by Kamana`o sandwiched an ace by Prince to make it 26-20 before the Rainbow Wahine put it away at 30-23 on consecutive kills by Houston.
The win pushed UH's WAC winning streak to 103 matches while running their consecutive games streak to 30 games.
Hawai`i will head for the road on Monday, Nov. 7, playing matches at Utah State on Nov. 9 and San Jose State on Nov. 12.
