WAIKOLOA, Hawai`i. - Four of eight University of Hawai`i men's tennis players advanced to the second round of the USTA's Hilton Waikoloa Village Futures Qualifying Round, Saturday. The four are still in contention to earn eight qualifying spots to the tournament's 32-man Main Draw.

Newcomer Sascha Heinemann, the qualifying round's eighth-seeded player, easily won his match over Christian Schonau of Denmark, 6-3, 6-2. In tomorrow's second round, Heinemann will face teammate Ryan Sceats, a 6-1, 6-2 winner over fellow Rainbow Warrior newcomer Jeff Fitch.

Also winning their matches were seniors Bryon Weinberg and Jarrod Diepraam. Weinberg defeated Eric Pelton, 6-0, 6-2 while Diepraam swept Lars Melskens of Denmark, 6-2, 6-1.

Juniors Chad Faulk, Brent Hunter and Derrick Lajola were eliminated from the tournament. Faulk fell to Bijan Hijazi, 6-4, 6-4, Hunter dropped a tough three-set match to Cornelius Haarmann, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, and Lajola lost to the 11th-seed Holden Seguso, 6-1, 6-1.

The qualifying round continues through Monday with the Main Draw beginning on Tuesday. The doubles Main Draw begins on Monday.
