HONOLULU - In a match covering two days and two sites due to inclement weather, San Diego State defeated the University of Hawai`i men's tennis team, 4-3, Friday, at the Central Oahu Regional Park. The nationally ranked Aztecs spoiled UH coach John Nelson's match-up against the team he coached for 10 seasons.

The match was originally scheduled for Thursday, at the UH Tennis Complex, but rain forced postponed it for Friday. However, showers throughout the day at the UH Tennis Complex pushed the match to Central Oahu Regional Park.

The Aztecs won the doubles point by winning all three matches. In singles competition, the teams split the six singles matches. UH senior Ryan Sceats outlasted Robert Sabo at No. 3, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Junior Derrick Lajola defeated Eugenio Romero at No. 5, 7-5, 6-4 and junior Chad Faulk beat Anthony Gomez at the No. 6 court, 6-2, 6-2.

The Aztecs won at the No. 1, 2, and 4 singles courts. Freshman Sacha Heinenmann dropped his No. 1 court match to Christian Groh, 7-6 (8), 6-0. Seniors Bryon Weinberg and Jarrod Diepraam were both defeated in straight sets. Weinberg lost to Markus Dickhardt at No. 2, 6-1, 6-4, and Stefan Cimu defeated Diepraam at No. 4, 6-2, 6-3.

"We could have won this match today," UH head coach John Nelson said. "Our guys are improving and getting better each day and by the end of this season we will be able to beat that team."

On Saturday, members of the Rainbow Warriors will compete in the USTA Honolulu Futures tournament at the UH Tennis Complex. The qualifying single's draw runs until Monday.
