Rainbow Wahine Finish Eighth At WAC Championships

BOISE, Idaho - The Hawai`i women's cross country team concluded its 2005 season by finishing eighth at the Western Athletic Conference Championships, Saturday, at Eagle Island State Park. For the fifth time this season, junior Sheena Thain led the way for the Rainbow Wahine by finishing 40th with a time of 19:50.31.

Thain was the team's strongest and most consistent runner this season, leading the team at the Chaminade Invite, Big Wave Invite, BYU-Hawai`i Invite, UC Riverside Invite and today's WAC Championship. Junior Sharlene Carillo was the second UH runner to finish, placing 45th overall in 20:23.46. Newcomers Michel Wilson (20:30.50, 49th) and Annett Wichmann (21:38.93, 58th) were next while junior Ashley Monfort (22:00.83, 60th) rounded out the team qualifiers.

Freshmen Shelly Dreese (23:03.68, 61st) and McKenzie Wallace (23:14.58, 62nd) also participated for UH.

WAC newcomer Idaho won the women's competition with a team score of 30 points as four of its runners placed among the top five finishers overall. Utah State (43) finished second followed by San Jose State (107), host Boise State (115), Nevada (131) and Fresno State (131) tied for fifth, New Mexico State (167) and Hawai`i (231).

Idaho's Dee Olson won the individual title, crossing the finish line in 17:31.31.
