SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Hawai`i men's tennis team completed Day 1 of the Wilson/ITA North Western Region Championships, Friday. Senior Ryan Sceats won both of his singles and doubles matches to advance in the Main Draw.

The Rainbow Warriors started off the day on a high note. Three of the four doubles teams advanced to the Round of 32. Seniors Sceats and Jarrod Diepraam defeated Will McCallister and Thomas Morton of Sacramento State, 8-4. Junior Chad Faulk and senior Bryon Weinberg squeezed by Portland's Luis Gonzalez and Darragh Rowan, 8-6. Newcomer Brent Hunter and senior Yasuo Sakurai crushed Milos Popovic and Randy Reynolds of Nevada, 8-1.

In singles play, the Rainbow Warriors got two big wins, including Sceats' 6-2, 6-4 straight set victory over Stanford's Ken Kao. Sceats was the only UH player to advance to the Round of 32. In an exciting, tight match, freshman Jeff Fitch ousted San Francisco's Andre Hogan, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4, in the Round of 128 but dropped his second round match to ninth-seeded James Pade of Stanford, 6-1, 6-1. Diepraam won his first round match by default and lost in the Round of 64 to Washington's Daniel Chu, 6-2, 6-2.

The tournament resumes on Saturday as the three Rainbow Warrior doubles team compete in the Round of 32 along with Sceats in singles.
