SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Junior
Sharlene Carillo ran a season-best time of 19:31.19 as the Hawai`i women's cross country team concluded its regular season at the Santa Clara Invitational, Saturday. Carillo led a UH contingent to a seventh place finish on the 5K Baylands Regional Park course.
Carillo finished 43rd overall and clocked in as the team's highest finisher for the first time this season. Moments later, junior Michel Wilson crossed the finish line in 19:47.40 for 47th place followed by junior Sheena Thain (19:49.83, 49th), who had previously led UH in its four meets this season. For the second consecutive meet, the Rainbow Wahine had three finishers run sub-20:00 times.
Also scoring points for the Rainbow Wahine were junior Ashley Monfort (20:29.20, 59th) and freshman McKenzie Wallace (21:46.62, 71st). Sophomore Shelly Dreese (23:01.08, 73rd) competed but her mark did not count towards the team's finish.
San Diego State won the women's race with 31 total points followed by Cal State Fullerton (54), UC Davis (70), San Jose State (87), host Santa Clara (109), Saint Mary's (208), Hawai`i (213), and Notre Dame de Namur (235). SDSU's Lital Azulay won the individual title with a time of 17:03.10, edging teammate Lisa Crampton (17:34.23).
The Rainbow Wahine take the next week off before competing in the Western Athletic Conference Championships, Oct. 29, in Boise, Idaho.
