MOSCOW, Idaho - The No. 11 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team (12-6, 6-0 WAC) swept through the Idaho Vandals (10-9, 2-4) 30-24, 30-22 and 30-18 in their first-ever trip to Memorial Gym Thursday.
Juliana Sanders had 14 kills and three blocks while hitting .550. Sarah Mason put up 19 kills, nine digs and a .308 hitting percentage while Victoria Prince ended the night with 11 kills, six blocks, four aces and a .429 hitting percentage. Tara Hittle and Ashley Watanabe led in the back row with 18 and 11 digs, respectively, while Kanoe Kamana`o had another great all-around night, posting 49 assists, eight digs and five blocks.
Idaho jumped ahead 6-3 early in the first game before a 5-2 run by the Rainbow Wahine tied it at nine. Hawai`i then put up a big 8-2 run to go up 18-13, forcing a timeout by the Vandals. Idaho quickly got back into the game out of the break, scoring four of the next five points, cutting the deficit to 19-17. The difference stayed around two points until Prince took over, scoring the final three points on two kills and a block, ending it at 30-24.
Prince kept it going at the start of game two, scoring three-straight aces to put UH up 4-0. Idaho made a small comeback, getting it to 8-6, before the Rainbow Wahine ran off 11 of the next 14 points to go up 19-9. From there, Hawai`i cruised on to the victory, as a dump by Kamana`o gave UH the 30-22 victory.
The Vandals scored the first three points in the third game, only to see UH answer with five-straight to take a 5-3 edge. Idaho took back the lead at 9-8 before the Rainbow Wahine took over, going on a 16-4 run, capped by a huge kill by Houston, to push to a 24-13 advantage. After two unsuccessful shots at ending the match, Sanders put away kill number 15 to close game three 30-18.
Hawai`i will now head south in the state to Boise, Idaho, to face Boise State at 2 p.m. (10 a.m. HST) on Saturday, Oct. 15.
