HONOLULU - Senior
Kimberly Curtis was the lone bright spot in Hawai'i's 6-1 loss to No. 33 Illinois, Sunday afternoon, at the UH Tennis Complex. The match was the spring season opener for both teams.
Curtis was the only Rainbow Wahine to win her singles match defeating Anastasia Sokolova, 7-6 (5), 6-0 at the No. 5 court.
Senior Paige Mainor extended her match with Brianna Knue at the No. 4 spot but eventually lost 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Senior Lauren Fitzgerald dropped her first match since earning a No. 94 national ranking to No. 111 Cynthya Goulet, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1.
"I thought we did a great job, considering we had just one week of practice together," head coach Carolyn Katayama said. "Still we have things to work on but for one week, such as the mental aspect of the game, but I'm satisfied with their effort."
The Rainbow Wahine (0-2) return to the court, Feb. 4, when they face No. 17 California.
