Warriors in Third After the Opening Round of the Ron Moore Classic

DENVER, Colo. -The University of Hawai`i men's golf team posted a one-over-par 289 in the first round of the Ron Moore Invitational to gain sole possession of third place in their first tournament of the 2004-05 season. The second round of play at the 7,129 yard Riverdale Dunes Golf Course was suspended late in the day because of bad weather and darkness.

The Warriors were led by junior-transfer Jarett Hamamoto, who opened his season with a three-under-par 69 in the first round. Hamamoto, who played two seasons at Air Force before returning to his home state of Hawai`i, stands alone in fifth place. Sophomore Pierre-Henri Soero, a native of New-Caledonia, shot a par 72 to finish day one in a tie for 13th. Fellow sophomore golfer Cody Wolfenbarger is tied for 21st after he shot a one-over 73. Former Manoa Cup champions Senior Kellen-Floyd Asao and freshman Ryan Perez each finished the first round tied for 41st with three-over par 75s.

The University of Arizona Wildcats lead the 16-team field by eight strokes after they shot an impressive 10-under-par 278 in round one. Arizona's Travis Esway sits atop the leader board with a six-under-par 66, three strokes ahead of Hawai`i's Hamamoto and two strokes ahead of his closest competitors. If weather permits, the second round will be completed tomorrow morning and the beginning of round three will follow.
