LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - The seventh-seeded Hawai'i women's water polo team allowed eight second half goals in falling to sixth-seed California, 9-4, Saturday, at the MPSF Tournament, held at Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Center. UH's fourth loss this season to the Golden Bears dropped the Rainbow Wahine to 13-14 on the season and into the seventh place match against UC Santa Barbara on Sunday.
Hawai`i fought back from a 1-0 first quarter deficit to net three-straight goals in the second period and capture a 3-1 halftime lead. However, California (16-12) struck back using the power play and went on a 4-0 third quarter run to regain control of the match, 5-3. UH kept the match close behind goalie Amber Lumb's nine-save showing, and an Audrey Harrer goal late in the third drew the Rainbow Wahine to within one. However, the Golden Bears closed the door with four more scores in the final period to seal the victory.
Harrer led the way for Hawai`i with two goals, but MPSF scoring leader Beth Novick was limited to only one. Shannon Carroll also chipped in a goal for the Rainbow Wahine.
Hawai`i finishes the MPSF Tournament and its season with Sunday's seventh-place match against ninth-seed UC Santa Barbara, slated for 1:30 p.m. PDT. The Rainbow Wahine have defeated UCSB twice this season, both times by one goal. In their last meeting, UH used a three-goal fourth quarter to capture a 7-6 comeback win in an MPSF match-up in Honolulu.
