HOUSTON, Texas - The Hawai'i women's tennis team were eliminated from the 2004 Western Athletic Conference Championships after suffering a 4-0 quarterfinal loss to second-seeded SMU, Saturday morning, at the Jewish Community Center indoor courts, in a match suspended the night before due to rain. The seventh-seeded Rainbow Wahine finishes their season at 9-14.
The Mustangs, ranked No. 42 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, took the doubles point after winning the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. UH's No. 2 team of Lauren Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor had their four-match win streak snapped with an 8-1 loss to Lynsie Jones and Nadia Vaughan. Justine Boutet and Renata Camargo dropped an 8-2 decision to Svetlana Kouzmenko and Allison Leuszler, 8-2 at No. 3.
In singles competition, the Mustangs won the Nos. 2, 3, and 4 spots, with Kit Carson's 6-2, 6-3 victory over Boutet at No. 2 proving to be the deciding point. Sylvia Jaros fell to Jenny Langer, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 and Mainor suffered a 6-2, 6-1 setback to Vaughan at No. 4.
The Rainbow Wahine advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Nevada, 4-0 in a `play-in' match, Friday morning.
Lone senior Camargo closed out a brilliant two-year career. The Sao Paulo, Brazil native compiled a 27-6 career singles record, including a 15-4 mark this season. The Rainbow Wahine return its top five players and seven letterwinners for next season.
