Rainbow Wahine Advance in MPSF Tournament

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Hawai'i women's water polo team reached the quarterfinals of the 2004 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament with an 8-4 victory over UC Irvine, Friday morning, at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Center. The Rainbow Wahine, who are seeded seventh in the 12-team field, will now face second-seeded Stanford, in a quarterfinal match-up at 5:00 p.m. PDT.

Three Rainbow Wahine had multiple-goal performances, including junior Beth Novick's two goals. The MPSF's leading scorer increased her season total to 61. Sophomore Kristy Bagnall, the league's seventh leading scorer, also added two goals.

Goalie Amber Lumb recorded 12 saves, including seven in the second half as the Rainbow Wahine extended their one-goal lead to 5-2, midway through the third period on the first of two goals from Darcy Scott-Hosaka at 4:54.

Melissa Fernandez's goal at 2:54 in the third brought UCI (9-20) to within, 5-4, but UH would score the final three of the contest, including the last netter of the third, at 1:16, by Shannon Carroll to make it 6-4.

Earlier this season, the Rainbow Wahine (13-12) barely lost to Stanford, 7-6 in overtime, during the Aloha Classic in Honolulu. The Cardinal are 18-3 on the year including a 10-1 mark in league play.
