Cardinal Ends Hawai'i's MPSF Title Hopes

MPSF Tournament Results

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Second-ranked Stanford moved on to the semifinals of the 2004 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament after a 10-3 victory over the Hawai'i women's water polo team, Friday afternoon, at the Los Alamitos Joint Forces Training Center. The seventh-seeded Rainbow Wahine (13-13) were eliminated from the championship rounds and can now finish no higher than fifth.

After a close first quarter, Stanford (19-3) out-scored Hawai`i 5-1 in the second period to grab a commanding 6-1 halftime lead. MPSF-leading scorer Beth Novick put UH on the scoreboard midway through the second after the Cardinal took a 4-0 lead.

Scotti Shafer scored three goals for the Cardinal and Katie Hansen added two for the Cardinal, who earlier this season slipped past UH, 7-6 in overtime. Goalie Meredith McColl allowed three goals and had seven saves.

The Rainbow Wahine will now face sixth-seeded California, who lost to UCLA, 8-4, in its quarterfinal match-up. The match is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. PDT. UH and Cal have met three times this season with the Bears winning all three matches. In their last meeting, Cal barely held off the Rainbow Wahine, 10-9, during the second day of the Gaucho Tournament in Santa Barbara, Calif.
