HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i softball team split a pair of Western Athletic Conference games against Louisiana Tech tonight at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The Rainbow Wahine dropped a 1-0 decision in the opener before bouncing back and winning 3-0 in the nightcap.
Hawai`i's Shannon Tabion (15-9) tossed a two-hit shutout in game two to earn UH a split in the first of two days of doubleheaders against the Lady Techsters.
UH got on the board early in Game Two as Denise Dahlberg cranked her team-leading eighth home run of the season to left field in the first inning to give UH a 1-0 lead.
UH added to the lead in the sixth when Tyleen Tausaga hit the first pitch out to straight-away center for her fourth round-tripper of the spring. Ruff followed with a single up the middle, stole second, and came home on Jennifer Hackett's double off the left center field fence to cap the scoring.
Game One was a classic pitcher's duel heading into the top of a scoreless sixth inning. In the inning, LTU's Casey Reife drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Mary Cohn then drove a pitch to the right center alley where both centerfielder Mmarie Jackson and right fielder Tracie Uchima converged. The two miscommunicated and allowed the ball to fall in between them for a RBI double.
LTU's Marla Pinkston (14-15) made the one run hold up as she limited the UH offense to two base runners - issuing a lead-off walk to Jackson in the third and an infield single to shortstop by Tara Harbert in the sixth. UH's Melissa Coogan (9-17) suffered the setback allowing five hits, four walks, while striking out three.
Hawai`i (25-30, 7-11 WAC) closes out its home schedule Saturday, May 1, with a twi-night doubleheader against Louisiana Tech (24-27, 7-6) beginning at 3 p.m.
