WAIPAHU - The Hawai'i men's tennis team showed its dominance in a 6-1 victory over Sonoma State, an NCAA Division II member, Saturday afternoon, at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 7-12 on the year.
"I'm pleased with the victory," head coach John Nelson said. "We took all three doubles matches and are guys are getting better. I definitely see improvement with this team."
UH had no difficulty in its three wins at the doubles court to take a 1-0 match lead. In singles competition, the Rainbow Warriors won five of the six matches, including sophomore Ryan Sceats' 6-3, 6-1 victory over Patrick Nagle at the No.1 court. Since switching back to the top singles position three matches ago, Sceats earned his second victory and improved his season record to a team-leading 13-9.
Junior Dalibor Ptak posted a straight-set victory over Thomas Morton at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Derrick Lajola rebounded from an opening set loss, and rallied for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Phillip Taylor at the No. 4 court. The only UH player to lose his match was sophomore Bryon Weinberg, who lost a super-tiebreaker to Matt Parker, 0-6, 7-5, (10-6), at the No. 3 position.
The Rainbow Warriors return to the court against Cal Lutheran, Monday, April 5. First serve is 2:00 p.m. at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex.
