EL PASO, Texas--The University of Hawai`i women's golf team has three top-20 golfers after the first round of competition. The Rainbow Wahine shot a first-round 306 to finish the day in fourth place out of the seven WAC teams competing on the 6,010 yard Underwood Golf Course in El Paso, Texas.
Once again, UH is led by their freshman golfers Dale Gammie and Sara Odelius, who each had a solid start in their first WAC championships. Gammie shot a three-under-par 69, which gave her sole possession of fourth place and puts her only one stroke away from first place. Odelius, a native of Sweden, shot a five-over par 77, which tied her for 13th place on the leader board. Sophomore Tara Chappell is not far behind, as she shot a six-over-par 78, which tied her for 17th. Also competing for the Rainbow Wahine are senior Rene Krause (82, +10) and freshman Megan Stoddart (82, +10).
San Jose State leads the seven-team field after shooting a three-over-par 291 in round one. San Jose State's Ashley Gomes, Nevada's Erin Long, and Tulsa's Julie Tvede are in a three-way tie for first place after they shot four-under-par 68s. Round two will begin tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. MST. The WAC Championship will conclude on Tuesday, April 21.
