Rainbow Wahine Fall to Top-Ranked USC, 12-5

LOS ANGELES - Top-ranked USC handed the Hawai'i women's water polo team a 12-5 loss, Friday, at the McDonald's Swim Stadium, to finish with a perfect 11-0 mark in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. The Rainbow Wahine dropped to 10-10 overall and 4-6 in the MPSF.

Hawai‘i held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 against the Women of Troy, whom UH has beaten just twice in 17 opportunities. Sophomore Kristy Bagnall put the Rainbow Wahine on the scoreboard on their first possession, 38 seconds into the match. After USC tied it up, junior Beth Novick scored at the 4:00 mark to give UH its final lead.

The Women of Troy scored seven unanswered to close out the half, as seven different players torched the nets to give USC a commanding 7-2 lead at the break. UH ended the run with a penalty shot goal by Shannon Carroll to start the third. But the Women of Troy answered back with five straight for a 12-3 lead. Colleen Schiman and Rilea Stober added late goals for the Rainbow Wahine, who held USC leading scorer Moriah Van Norman scoreless.

UH continues its three-day road trip by participating in The Beach Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State, April 17-18. The Rainbow Wahine opens the tournament against the host 49ers at 10:00 a.m. PDT followed by a match-up against UC San Diego at 2:30 p.m. PDT.
