LONG BEACH, Calif. - For the second time this season, Long Beach State handed the Hawai'i women's tennis team a defeat, this time a 5-2 decision, Thursday, at the 49er Tennis Courts. With the loss, the Rainbow Wahine dropped to 8-12 on the year.
The Beach won two of the three doubles positions and four of the six singles spots. The team of Lauren Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor defeated Kelly Chan and Alanah Carroll, 8-4 at the No. 2 court, for the lone Rainbow Wahine doubles victory. In singles play, Fitzgerald posted an impressive victory over Nicole Bouffler at No. 1, to improve to 15-10 overall. At the No. 5 court, Kimberly Curtis swept Sandra Rocha, 7-5, 6-4, for her third consecutive victory.
Playing without an ailing Mainor in singles competition, UH head coach Carolyn Katayama bumped senior Renata Camargo up to the No. 4 court for just the second time in her career. Camargo had her personal seven-match win streak snapped in a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Emmanuelle Tabatruong to fall to 13-4 overall.
Katayama’s daughter Krystina, an LBSU freshman, partnered with Tabatruong for an 8-4 victory over Camargo and Justine Boutet at the No. 3 doubles court. She did not play in the team’s earlier meeting, a 6-1 49er victory, Feb. 29, at the Central Oahu Tennis Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine continue its three-match road trip through California against Cal State Fullerton, Friday, April 16 and UC Riverside, Saturday, April 17.
